OMF (file format)

Open Media Format (OMF) - also known as Open Media Framework or Open Media Framework Interchange (OMFI) - is a platform-independent file format designed to facilitate the transfer of digital media between different software programs.

OMFI enables media to be shared and edited across various applications and operating systems. It allows users to import media elements and retain editing data, such as effect summaries and sequence information. Its main focus is on managing sequential representations of media.

Core Purpose and Features

While OMFI was primarily created to support video production workflows, it offers several other key capabilities:

  • Source Traceability: Media origins are easy to track, whether from videotape or film.
  • Predefined Effects and Transitions: Built-in options allow for seamless overlapping and sequencing of tracks.
  • Motion Control Support: Users can adjust playback speed for specific segments relative to others.

Key Benefits of OMFI

  • Faster Workflow: Eliminates time-consuming tape-based transfers.
  • Cross-Platform Flexibility: Compatible with multiple applications and workstations.
  • High Quality: Maintains top audio and video quality during import.
  • Reduced Compatibility Issues: Prevents formatting errors, allowing creators to focus on the creative process.
  • Preserved Editing Data: Retains formatting, effects, and sequencing information during transfers, so there’s no need to rebuild edits in new software environments.

OMFI File Structure

An OMFI file is divided into four main sections:

  • Header - Contains an index of all segments within the file.
  • Object Data
  • Object Dictionary
  • Track Data

This structure ensures efficient management and interpretation of media across various systems.
